Our History

The MSC Group’s history began in 1970 in Brussels, Belgium, when Captain Gianluigi Aponte founded the business with a small conventional ship, MV Patricia. As globalization and containerization became prominent, the Group formed its first business, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company. Today, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has grown to be a world leader in container shipping.

The Group has expanded its offerings to grow into road, rail, air and port terminal infrastructure. Today, the Group is acknowledged as an important investor in several of the world’s most active ports, operates award-winning luxury cruises and provides a wide range of passenger ferry services. Our growth has allowed our successful and strategic transition into transportation solutions beyond the sea to various sectors to better serve our customers.  

With over 200,000 employees, the MSC Group spans every continent, bringing our passion for the sea and people to the forefront of our business. The Group’s global leadership in transportation, shipping and logistics continues to evolve into long-term partnerships with companies committed to making a difference. 

Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the MSC Group is a privately owned family company. Our humble beginnings continue to shape the business, providing care for our customers, employees and the environment.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company was founded to provide timely delivery of goods and services to local communities, customers and international business partners across five continents.

MEDLOG was established as the logistics arm of MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, offering a one-stop shop for global inland solutions supporting the ever-growing customer base.

MSC Cruises was acquired and later established as the world’s third-largest cruise brand and a market leader in Europe, South America, the Middle East and Southern Africa.

Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) was founded as MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company's subsidiary and is one of the world’s largest and most geographically diverse container terminal managing investors.

SNAV was acquired by the MSC Group and is an Italian company that operates ferry services in Italy and Croatia.

Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV) joined the MSC Group as one of the main Italian shipping companies operating in the fields of passenger and freight sea transport.

WEC Lines joined the MSC Group as a proud container shipping line with intermodal connections.

The MSC Foundation was established to implement the MSC Group’s marine conservation, humanitarian and sustainable development commitments worldwide.

Explora Journeys was launched by the MSC Group with the ambition of reinventing the luxury cruise category for a new generation of discerning, cosmopolitan travellers.

Log-In joined the Group as a coasting trade company and integrated logistics operator headquartered in Brazil.

Africa Global Logistics (AGL) joined the MSC Group and is the reference multimodal logistics operator (port, logistics, sea and rail) in Africa.

MSC Air Cargo is the latest addition to MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company's expansive logistics portfolio, created to meet the surging demand for efficient air cargo solutions.

The MSC Group welcomed MedTug, a leading worldwide harbour towage operator.

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company completed the acquisition of Mediclinic Group, which aims to offer a wide range of services from experts in different fields of healthcare.

Italo joined the MSC Group as the first Italian private operator on the high-speed rail network.

Gram Car Carriers (GCC) joined the Group and is the world's third-largest tonnage provider within the Pure Car Truck Carriers (PCTCs) segment with 19 vessels.
